We live in very exciting musical times. The digital revolution, if disruptive on many levels, has unleashed new possibilities of listening and creating music. In this class we explore how technological advancements have shaped music in the past and how they might influence the future of music. We will focus on critical aspects of the symbiotic relationship between music and technology. The historical organization of the class will provide opportunities to explore particular aspects of electronic music and their technical underpinnings. Furthermore, as we learn about new processes put in place by new technological ideas we will use them to create our own composition within the limits of that particular technique. Incidentally, we will observe how these techniques have shaped and are shaping contemporary techniques of music creation.
