The other day in class we talked about how the internet was a gateway to new “Do It Yourself” techniques and attitudes. This just made me think about all of the “DIY” sites out there such as Pinterest which encourage people to be crafty and to do/make lots of things that traditionally people buy. I think looking up instructions and making something by hand gives people a greater personal connection to the item rather than a more remote detachment to the item that many people associate with digital communications and relationships. It’s interesting how the internet can provide a means to make something more personal, as well as more distant. Maybe the take home lesson is the internet is what you make of it.
