Although standards for the practice of excavation are well established in the field of archaeology and are followed in most modern digs, standards for the description of the finds are largely nonexistent. The ArchaeoCore Project proposes a solution to this problem of the fragmentation of information relating to archaeological excavations. By preserving the context of archaeological finds, archaeologists and other researchers are able to gain access to critical information about the history of the objects and to re-aggregate dispersed materials in the legacy collections in libraries, archives, and museums.
The first version of the ArchaeoCore schema was developed last year by the Image Management team at the Fiske Kimball Fine Arts Library for use in the Shared Shelf Content Management System provided by ARTstor. ArchaeoCore was then offered as a beta version to the thirty-four partners in the Shared Shelf consortium.
