Course Description

Race, Caste, & Cultures of Discrimination

Through a comparative approach to the study of race and caste, this course equips students to engage critically with historical and current-day discrimination in the U.S. and India. We begin by exploring theories of hierarchy and social inequality in early structural accounts of race and caste in anthropology, and then look to accounts of racism/casteism to examine how articulations of the experience of discrimination complicate these theories.
